The old town of Herceg Novi lies between several fortifications dating from the 15th century and beyond. The old town used to be surrounded with city walls, today they can only be seen here and there, since they were destroyed in many earthquakes and battles.
The central point of Herceg Novi is the square, situated at the end of the Negoseva Street. It is the place where everybody meets for a chat and a drink. It is surrounded by old houses and is full of nice cafes. There are lots of little streets and staircases leading to and from the square.
Tourism on the Herceg Novi Riviera is less developed than the Budva Riviera, therefore the prices of all tourist services, accommodation, hotels, excursions, bars and restaurants, but also the service level is lower. Herceg Novi used to be a health resort once, but the spa hotels unfortunately are on a low level nowadays.
Herceg Novi counts a large number of beaches, from rock and pebble beaches to sand beaches. Blatna plaza (Mud beach) is rich with very healing sand and mud. The Blatna beach in Sutorina, several kilometres away from Herceg Novi is one of the biggest beaches on the Herceg Novi Riviera.
One of the must do's when staying in Herceg Novi is visiting the Blue cave located on the Lustica Peninsula. The cave got its name after the unusual blue light of the water which on clear days is created by the reflection of the sunrays which hit the surface. How to get there? While you are at the beach, listen to voices coming from the little boats that are taking tourists for small cruises. If they are saying: "Plava Spilja" it's the boat you want to get on and enjoy this jewel of nature.
